However, the authorities did not accept a mobile phone driver's license as the only proof of a driver's license in the first round of traffic control. From the beginning, the competent authority referred to the digital driver's license as a "digital copy" of the original driver's license.

Not a completely valid option. The only second step is to bring the digital document to the level of a credit card or paper driver's license. Current time horizon for this? Let's talk long-term. On the one hand, the Federal Transport Authority has shown a lack of a legal framework so far.

On the other hand, the "Digital Driving License" project could not bring the level without an accident.

When will a digital driving license come?

On September 23, 2021, the ID wallet application required for the digital driver's license was launched. A few days later, the app was removed from the App Store due to technical issues.

A new version of the program is being developed by KBA. As of 04/2022, it is unclear when the ID Wallet app will be available again.

Is it possible to replace a regular driver's license with a digital driver's license? Unlike a card license, a digital driver's license cannot completely replace it. It currently has no legal basis. Even if you are stopped by the police while driving, you must have your driver's license in card format.

Does a digital driving license have a high level of security?

According to the Federal Motor Transport Authority, digital driver's licenses are securely encrypted using advanced technology. According to KBA, your personal information will not be altered or misused.

Digital betting license activation - step by step

To be able to use the "EID" application and thus the digital driving license, you must first verify your Austrian identity card with the "Digital Office" application.

• If the ID Austria is confirmed in the "Digital Office" application, you can activate the "EID" application.
• A digital driver's license may then be referred to as an "EID" application.

For security, fingerprint function or facial recognition should be enabled. It is not possible to use the app with older smartphones without these features.

Requirements for Digital Driving Permit

• To use a digital driving license you need:
• EU driving license on the credit card (old paper driving license cannot be digitally transferred)
• A smartphone with access to the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store
• A valid ID card with active online functionality and a six-digit PIN code

Important: ID cards with an online function (= Perso) have been available since 2011. For ID cards from 2017, you can choose whether to activate the function online or not. It is enabled by default since 2017.

If you have not yet activated the online function, you can activate it later on in the registration. If you have forgotten your old PIN, you will need a new PIN for the online ID function. 

How to get Digital Driving License:

• Step 1: Register your own ID with Austria in the "Digital Office" application.
• Step 2: Download the free app "Eauswisung" on the same smartphone for free.
• Step 3: The application should be activated using the "Digital Office" application and the digital driving license should be loaded on the smartphone.
• Step 4: Additionally, the app should be secured with an active fingerprint feature or facial recognition.

Other areas of application for digital driving permit

In traffic control: Proof of digital license in traffic control by the enforcement agency. Most of them always have their mobile phone with them - so "forgetting" your driver's license is a thing of the past.

Show ID Data: Proof of digital driver's license to a third party, who can then verify the driver's license using the "EID" program or the "EID-Check" program. Required Platform Issue: ID Wallet initially failed

It was clearly not out of necessity; One of the last steps of outgoing Transport Minister Andreas Scheer (CSU) was a digital driver's license. Security researchers like Lilith Wittman have taken to social media to call for an eventual end to the project — at least in its current form. However, most experts are considering the possibility of reintroducing the digital driver's license through a modified version of the ID Wallet app or an alternative app.

Every motor vehicle in Austria can now digitize its driving license using the new platform or the new "EID" application. Only holders of an Austrian credit card driver's license (with digital photo) can obtain a digital driver's license.
